One of the most distinctive features of Harappan cities was the carefully planned drainage system. If you look at the plan of the Lower Town you will notice that roads and streets were laid out along an approximate “grid” pattern, intersecting at right angles. It seems that streets with drains were laid out first and then houses built along them. If domestic waste water had to flow into the street drains, every house needed to have at least one wall along a street. The Lower Town at Mohenjodaro provides examples of residential buildings. Many were centred on a courtyard, with rooms on all sides. The courtyard was probably the centre of activities such as cooking and weaving, particularly during hot and dry weather. What is also interesting is an apparent concern for privacy: there are no windows in the walls along the ground level. Besides, the main entrance does not give a direct view of the interior or the courtyard. Every house had its own bathroom paved with bricks, with drains connected through the wall to the street drains. Some houses have remains of staircases to reach a second storey or the roof. Many houses had wells, often in a room that could be reached from the outside and perhaps used by passers-by. Scholars have estimated that the total number of wells in Mohenjodaro was about 700. It is on the Citadel that we find evidence of structures that were probably used for special public purposes. These include the warehouse – a massive structure of which the lower brick portions remain, while the upper portions, probably of wood, decayed long ago – and the Great Bath. The Great Bath was a large rectangular tank in a courtyard surrounded by a corridor on all four sides. There were two flights of steps on the north and south leading into the tank, which was made watertight by setting bricks on edge and using a mortar of gypsum.

हड़प्पा नगरों की सबसे विशिष्ट विशेषताओं में से एक उनकी सुव्यवस्थित जल-निकासी प्रणाली थी। यदि आप निचले नगर की योजना को देखें, तो आपको पता चलेगा कि सड़कें और गलियाँ लगभग एक ‘ग्रिड’ पैटर्न के अनुसार बनाई गई थीं और एक-दूसरे को समकोण पर काटती थीं। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि नालियों वाली सड़कों का निर्माण पहले किया गया और उसके बाद उनके किनारे मकान बनाए गए। यदि घरेलू गंदा पानी सड़क की नालियों में प्रवाहित होना था, तो प्रत्येक मकान की कम-से-कम एक दीवार का सड़क के किनारे होना आवश्यक था। मोहनजोदड़ो का निचला नगर आवासीय भवनों के उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करता है। इनमें से अनेक भवन एक आँगन के चारों ओर बनाए गए थे और आँगन के चारों ओर कमरे होते थे। संभवतः गर्म और शुष्क मौसम में खाना पकाने और बुनाई जैसे कार्यकलापों का केंद्र यही आँगन होता था। यहाँ गोपनीयता को लेकर विशेष सावधानी भी दिखाई देती है: भूतल की दीवारों में कोई खिड़की नहीं थी। इसके अतिरिक्त, मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार से घर के अंदर या आँगन का सीधा दृश्य दिखाई नहीं देता था। प्रत्येक मकान में ईंटों से बनाया गया अपना स्नानघर था, जिसकी नालियाँ दीवार के माध्यम से सड़क की नालियों से जुड़ी हुई थीं। कुछ मकानों में दूसरी मंजिल या छत तक पहुँचने के लिए सीढ़ियों के अवशेष भी मिले हैं। अनेक मकानों में कुएँ थे। ये कुएँ अक्सर ऐसे कमरे में होते थे, जहाँ बाहर से पहुँचा जा सकता था और संभवतः राहगीर भी उनका उपयोग कर सकते थे। विद्वानों ने अनुमान लगाया है कि मोहनजोदड़ो में कुओं की कुल संख्या लगभग 700 थी। दुर्ग (Citadel) पर हमें ऐसी संरचनाओं के प्रमाण मिलते हैं, जिनका उपयोग संभवतः विशेष सार्वजनिक उद्देश्यों के लिए किया जाता था। इनमें एक विशाल अन्नागार/भंडारगृह (warehouse) शामिल था, जिसके निचले हिस्से ईंटों से बने हुए आज भी बचे हैं, जबकि ऊपरी हिस्से, जो संभवतः लकड़ी के बने थे, बहुत पहले नष्ट हो गए। इसके अलावा यहाँ महान स्नानागार (Great Bath) भी था। महान स्नानागार एक बड़े आयताकार जलाशय के रूप में था, जो एक आँगन में स्थित था और चारों ओर से एक गलियारे से घिरा हुआ था। जलाशय में प्रवेश के लिए उत्तर और दक्षिण दिशा में सीढ़ियों के दो सोपान थे। इसे ईंटों को किनारे पर रखकर और जिप्सम के गारे का प्रयोग करके जलरोधक बनाया गया था।
